It's 8:41

Rick was having some issues with his time checks today....either he was 2 hours ahead or 2 hours behind! It was funny......one of many things that made me laugh today. I was just thinking about how lucky I am. They actually pay me to listen to the Hotline! It's the best job in the world and I'm so grateful to have it.

The chickens were a big topic on the ol' show today. Louise Hanavan says she will be sending her chickens to Bridgewater because she can't afford to shell out money for a fine that could reach up to 10, 000 dollars! So...she's going to say good bye to fresh omelettes and Bernadette, Captain Crochet and Chicken at the end of the month.

Caller David was kind of frothed up today, wasn't he? He was angry because a gas station on the Hammonds Plains road wouldn't take American money. Although I agreed with Rick that it was a bad business decision, I can't fault the business. We live in Canada and deal in Canadian currency. If they don't want the hassle of having to change the money over, it's their business, bottom line.

I was pleased to hear about an appeal being launched on behalf of Robert Latimer. He's served his time; it's time for him to be released. Someone called last week to put it in perspective. They let Michael Robichaud out of jail last summer, a man who TOLD the parole board he would reoffend. 10 days later, he raped a Dartmouth gas station attendant and left her to die with a slashed throat. Yet, Robert Latimer, who I'm sure we can all agree poses no harm to anyone, languishes in jail. It's wrong.

Rick mentioned today that the feds keep talking about how they "can't govern by polls" in terms of making decisions about tough issues like Afghanistan. But isn't this a government who spent 30 million dollars on polls alone last year? When it comes to being hypocritical, the Harper Conservatives are the absolute worst.

Thanks so much to e-mailer Michael for such an astute observation in regards to this battle about a traffic signal near the Mount. He wrote that we had no problem connecting Nova Scotia to PEI, can we not span the Bedford Highway? Great e-mail, Michael, loved it.

Question (said a la Dwight Schrute from The Office) - Since when is not tendering a contract an "innocent oversight"? Isn't a typo an innocent oversight? Richard had a great line looking at one of the bureaucrats on the front of the Mail-Star this morning: "I looked at that picture and I had put on a sweater!!" She looks very...um...no nonsense.

Rick threw out the question - how can we increase voter turnout? Well, I'll tell you what works around this radio station: free food.

On that note - enjoy this sunny Thursday!!

Rodenhiser is in tomorrow...looking forward to that!

Cheers!

Hi amber,

I was mobile today listening to the hotline and can't wait until we get a FM signal down here as the reception is not real good in a lot of places. I also hope that the station keeps the hotline as it provides a voice for all Nova Scotians. While listening to the show, and your guest from Fair vote Nova Scotia. I can see where he is coming from. When the topic of Sunday shopping came up it sure made me boil when Diana Whalen made some comments concerning the plebiscite. We had a vote as Nova Scotians and it was completely ignored by government. She went on to say about the courts striking down the law. The courts did not strike down the law on Sunday shopping.

"Well, what this application is about is not about social or political considerations. It’s not about the appropriateness of Sunday shopping, nor is it about the power of the legislature to pass an Act dealing with Sunday shopping. This case, this application is about one fact and it is about the scope of the Cabinet’s power to pass Regulations pursuant to the Act."

Then came the debate about holiday shopping, we were told by our government that business's can not be told when to open and when to close. Well, they are now telling business's when they can open and when to close on Holidays. It would have been no different then telling them when they have to close on Sundays. That's why voter turn out is low Amber, this is one reason why Nova Scotians don't trust our politicians. Regarding Diana Whalen's bill for us to have another holiday. I do support another holiday, only if it is a paid stat holiday. If the government gets paid for it, so should all Nova Scotians. I have set up a facebook site for anyone that wants to join to pressure government into allowing another holiday and to legislate that all Statutory holidays be paid ones.

Does Diana Whalen want this to be a paid holiday? Or is it just another holiday for government? Part timers in our province are the least appreciated. All I want is fairness and this isn't happening. In Ontario they get 8 Statutory holidays and they are paid. What's wrong with Rodney MacDonald, that he can not do something for hard working Nova Scotians. He calls every day a family day. How can you do that working? How can say that when kids are in school? As a province we need to get our priorities straight. I think this blog also provides another way for Nova Scotians to speak out. As usual I enjoy listening to Rick's hotline. It would be nice to see Rick have a blog on here so that we can read and post comments on. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work.

Save Our Sundays/Nova Scotians against Holiday shopping

Good Evening.

I find Mr.Lohnes comments interesting.

I myself have been in retail for the last 14 years and let me tell you I truly dislike working Sundays. The Province can and has
attempted to tell us we don't have to work but let me tell you first hand we do. If not I have seen my Co-Workers hours be Cut and reduced by our dept Manager. And there is nothing We can do the message is clear you are to Work Sundays.

The fact of the matter is for better or worse the retail industry has changed in Nova Scotia. In my opinion until Employees like myself decide to have a true say in Our Workplace, Employers such as mine will continue to what they want, When they want, To who they want. The next step as We have seen from
Walmart is Stores being opened here
here 24 hours a day. The only reason why there not is the lack of our Population is not is to support it.

The past is a perfect indication of what is to come in the future. Company's such as Sobey's, Loblaws, And Wal-Mart care about one thing that is how much money they can make!

If you are a retail Employee such as myself I/We need to consider joining a Union and being Unionized then will we have a say in our workplace.
